Abstract:

Summary The present study was within the framework of positive psychology because of its manipulation of two variables that belong to positive psychology topics. The first is self-determination with its different dimensions according to Weimer’s model of self-determination (self independent, self regulation, self-empowerment, and self-achievement), while the second is positivity of social behavior (moral-social participation based on adherence to ethics, stick to social responsibility and the two types of sympathy: emotional sympathy and understanding of the other). The main idea of the present study is based on the grounds that self-determination is one of the determinants of positive social behavior. The study aimed at achieving two main aims: theoretical rooting of self-determination which did not receive enough research and investigation in Arabic world, and the second aim was to investigate the effect of a self-determination based program on positive social behavior among a sample of second year preparatory stage pupils. To achieve this, a self-determination scale (prepared by Wehmeyer & Lopez, 2003, translated by the researcher) was used, and a positive social behavior scale for teenager (prepared by the researcher). The results indicated the effectiveness the prepared program on enhancing self-determination on both short and long-term levels; consequently the positive social behavior was enhanced. The obtained results were interpreted and some recommendations and suggestions were introduced to both parents and those who are responsible for educational process. Moreover, the study introduced some suggested research based on the light of the obtained results.
