Abstract:

Introduction:About80%ofpatientsreceivingchemotherapeuticssufferfromsideeffectsrelatedtothegastrointestinaltract.Irinotecan(CPT-11)isachemotherapeuticagentusuallyusedintreatingsolidtumors.Quercetin(QRT),abioflavonoid,isanantioxidantandscavengerreactiveoxygenspeciesscavenger.Objective:ThecurrentstudyexploredthepossibleprotectiveeffectsofQRTagainstmucosaltongueinjurycausedbyCPT-11.Methods:Thestudyincludedfourequalgroups:group1/control,group2/QRT,group3/CPT-11,andgroup4/CPT-11+QRT.Results:CPT-11-inducedtongueinjuryintheformofnon-healedulcers,absentlingualpapillae,mononuclearcellsinfiltration,markeddepositionofcollagenfibers,andoverexpressionofCD86andtumornecrosisfactor-α(TNF-α).Theincreasedmalondialdehydelevels,decreasedsuperoxidedismutaseandtotalantioxidantcapacityrevealedthattherewasanoxidativestress.Also,therewasadecreasedcountenanceofKi-67andBcl-2andanincreasedcountenanceofNF-κB.TheQRT-treatedgroupshowedcompleteulcerhealing,withhistologicalfeaturesalmostlikethecontrolgroup,alongwithminimalcollagenfiberdeposition,decreasedreactivitytoCD86andTNF-αandimprovementofoxidativestressstatusandthemolecularstudyresultsaswell.Conclusion:QRTpossessprotectivepropertiesagainstCPT-11-triggeredtongueinjury.
