ينظر إلى الفيلسوف الأمريكى المعاصر نويل كارول على أنه أحد فلاسفة الجمال المعاصريين اللذين قدموا نظرة دقيقة خاصة إلى الفنون وجمالياتها .
إعتمد كارول على الفلسفة التحليلية كمدخل لنقد الفلسفات المثالية القديمة والمعاصرة التى تنظر إلى الفنون وأثرها الخلقى . ورأى أنه لا يمكن أن تعتمد على وجهة النظر التى تقول بالدور الخلقى للفن وتؤمن به . حيث أن تلك النظرة للفن ودورة من خلال البعد الخلقى فقط تتجاهل بشده جماليات الفن ودوره وكيفية بناء العمل الفنى ودور الخيال فى إثراء جمالياته . وتعمد إلى حصر دور الفن فى تقديم رساله خلقية تعمد إلى التأثير الإنفعالى على المتلقى . مثلما كان قديماً عند أفلاطون وأرسطو . فى نظرتهما للفن كوسيلة لإحداث مشاعر الشفقة والخوف لدى الجمهور
وإنتقد كارول أيضاً التيار الماركسى المعاصر الذى إهتم بالدور الإجتماعى للفن فقط متجاهلاً بقية أدواره الأخرى .
