Abstract:

Infection control measures are intended to protect patients, health care providers, hospital workers and other people in the health care settings. Aim of the study was to Design, implement and evaluate the impact of a training program on nurse's knowledge and practices regarding infection control measures at the intensive care unit in Benha University Hospital. The study hypotheses; 1) There will be a significant statistically differences between the pre program mean knowledge score of nurses who working in ICU as compare to their post program mean knowledge scores. 2) There will be a significant statistically differences between the pre program mean practices score of nurses who working in ICU as compare to their post program mean practices scores. 3) There will be positive correlation between nurses' knowledge and practices scores. The Sample: All nurses (40) working in the intensive care unit in Benha University Hospital. Their age was ranged between (20-30) years old with a mean age of [27.0 ± 3.46 years]. The study was conducted over 8 months in intensive care unit of Benha university hospital. Tools: A constructed assessment questionnaire sheet and an observational checklist were utilized to collect data pertinent to the study. Results of the study revealed the following: (a) the mean knowledge scores of nurses are increased immediately after implementation of the program with a significant statistical difference. This increased level slightly decreased post one and two, months of program implementation. (b) As well, the mean practice scores of the study group subjects was higher immediately after the implementation of the program with a high significant statistical difference compared to the pre program implementations, this increased level slightly decreased post one, and two, months of program implementation. (c) Also, no statistical significance was found between knowledge and practice scores of the study subjects therefore two stated research hypothesis were supported and one not supported. In conclusion, enrichment of nurses' knowledge and practices would have a positive impact upon their knowledge and performance. This could be of great importance upon patients’ condition and is a cost effective. The study recommended well planned orientation and in-service training programs on the performance standards, and proper supervision.
