This study analyzes how meaning can be built by different semiotic methods. Among those semiotic resources, there are the motion pictures or movies that can form meaning. The dissertation therefore studies how cinema makers work to get viewers work out meanings from every element on the screen. Film makers start to adapt literary works such as novels and turn them into movies. As a type of such adaptations, the research analyzes the novel of Harry Potter and its filmic reproduction as a movie. Systemic Functional Linguistics (1985) has been applied to some excerpts of Harry Potter novels. On the contrary, Multimodal Analysis (MA) by Kress and Leeuwen (2006) is utilized on some shots of Harry Potter movies. The dissertation seeks to prove that every image can construct a meaning. Moreover, the researcher shows how film makers and original writers of the same work paint this image differently.
