Abstract:

In Christian annals, the debate concerning the holy icons arose during the 8 th century, covering the historic period from 726 to 843 AD and spanned in the Eastern regions of the Byzantine Empire. People who revered religious images were called Iconodules or iconophiles, while those, who opposed the presence of these images in churches, were called Iconoclasts. The enthusiasm died out in the next century, but its effect was felt in a controversy that caused the last of many breaches with Rome and prepared the way for the schism of Photius. In this paper an attempt to uncover some concerns of this tenet and the role it had played in churches' interior design is to be introduced. The hypothesis that Iconostasis and the concept of imagery in Eastern Churches were direct results of this controversy is to be derived. In attempt to reach this point not only historical circumstances and attributes, but also doctrinal misunderstood that occurred at this pivotal era in the history of Christendom and led to this deviation will be overviewed. Iconoclasts believed that the worship of icons was sinful. In addition to destroying many sculptures and paintings, those opposed to images attempted to have them barred from display and veneration. Eradication of the visible representations, in any form, be it statues or paintings of Christ, His Mother, or the Saints, was the end to which they strove. A savage slaughter were induced in this attempt and "Byzantium saw men die for images"[2].
