Abstract:

Diabetesmellitus(DM)is associatedwithdamagetotargetorgansandprematureaging andtelomeresserveas amitoticclockandbiologicalmarkerofsenescence.Aimofstudy:wastoA)evaluate telomeraseactivity in bothtype i andtype2diabeticpatientswithmicroangiopathyandmacroangiopathy, B)to studythepossiblefactorsthataffecttheactivityofthisenzymeinthesepatients.SubjectsandMethods:Studywas carriedouton40patientsfromthoseattendingdiabetesclinicsofBanhaUniversityHospital,theyweredividedinto three groups:GroupI: 10type I diabeticpatientswithangiopathy(4males&6females).GroupII: l0type 2 diabetic patients withangiopathy(3males&7females). GroupIII: 20apparentlyhealthyage&sexmatched volunteers serving as a control group.Thefollowing laboratory investigations wereperformed to all patients: Plasmaglucose(fastingandpostprandial),Glycatedhemoglobin,Lipogram(Total cholesterol,LDLc,I-[DLcand Triglycerides),Serumcreatinine,UrinarymicroalbuminandStudyoftelomeraseactivityinwholeblood.Results: Ourresults showed: that (HBAIC,microalbumin, creatinine, LDL,TG,TCH,PPBSandFBS)aresignificantly higherindiabeticpatientscomparedtocontrolgroupwhere(telomeraseandHDL)aresignificantlylowerindiabetic patientscomparedtocontrolgroup.Also,TelomeraseactivitywassignificantlylowindiabeticpatientswithI-ll:AlC (27%). LDL-c (>l0Omg/dl), HDL-c (l50mg/dl), TCH (>200mg/dl), microalbuminuria (>30mg/ml) respectively compared to diabetic patients with I-IbAlC (
