Abstract:

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a major global health problem, which imposes a negative effect on patient morbidity and is responsible for an estimated 1.4 million deaths per year. The aim of this work was to find out prevalence, causes, diagnosis, complications, need to dialysis or not, management and prognosis of AKI in Kafr Elsheikh Governorate hospitals. Methods: The study included 250 patients admitted in intensive care unit (ICU) in Kafr Elsheikh governorate hospitals over six months. Patients were subjected for; Full history taking , physical examination and Laboratory investigation as serum creatinine, Urine analysis for hematuria , pyuria , casts , CBC for anemia , serum Na , K , CRP, RBS , liver function tests , ABG . Results and conclusion: The study included 250 patients, mean age 49.7 ± 7.2. The study included 132(52.8%) male cases and 118(47.2%) female cases. hypertension was present in 34 % of patients, while CHD was present in 12.8 %. DM and chronic liver disease were also present but at lower percentages. Sepsis was the commonest precipitating factor for AKI in these patients (61.2%) followed by dehydration (53.6 %). Oliguria was a presentation symptom in 45.6% of patients, infectious symptoms were present in 45.6 %. As regard mortality, (12.8%) of patients died during their admission. Complete renal recovery was the most common outcome of AKI patients in our study (53.2%).
