Background: Women who undergoing mastectomy always exposed to a variety of emotional,
physical, and psychological consequences that have a severe impact on their body image, selfefficacy and hence self-esteem. Aim: Assess the correlation between body image, self-esteem and
self-efficacy among women with mastectomy. Research question: What is the correlation between
body image, self-esteem and self-efficacy among women with mastectomy? Design: A descriptive
correlational research design was used in this study. Setting: It was carried out at women surgery
department at Benha university hospital, Benha City, Qalyubia governorate. Sample: A purposive
sample of 100 mastectomy affected women was chosen from the above mentioned setting. Tools:
Tool (I): A structured Interviewing Questionnaire Sheet, Tool (II): Body image scale, Tool (III):
Rosenberg Self –esteem scale and Tool (V): Self-efficacy scale. Results: Findings reflected that
nearly two thirds of studied mastectomy affected women had poor body image. In addition, more
than half of them reported low levels of self-esteem and self- efficacy. Conclusion: There was a
highly statistically significant positive correlation between mean scores of total levels of body
image, self-esteem and self-efficacy among the studied mastectomy affected women.
Recommendation: Enhancing body image, self-esteem and self –efficacy among mastectomy
affected women by involving psycho -educational program as an integral entity of comprehensive
care provided at all hospitals. |
