Abstract:

The Upper Cretaceous – Lower Tertiary succession exposed at Saint Paul and Sudr El-Hitan around the Gulf of Suez have been measured and studied in details using both macro and microfossil assemblages. At Saint Paul, it was subdivided lithostratigraphically into the Galala Formation (Cenomanian – early Middle Turonian), the Wata Formation (late Middle – Late Turonian), the Matulla Formation (Coniacian – Santonian), the Sudr Formation (Campanian – Earliest Paleocene), the Esna Formation (Paleocene – Earliest Eocene) and the lower part of Thebes Formation (Early Eocene). In Sudr El-Hitan section, it has been subdivided lithostratigraphically into the Sudr Formation (Campanian – Maastrichtian), the Esna Formation (Paleocene – Earliest Eocene) and the lower part of Thebes Formation (Early Eocene). Four ammonite zones have been recognized in Saint Paul section as follows; Vascoceras cauvini Total Range Zone (Latest Cenomanian), Choffaticeras securiforme – Choffaticeras quaasi Total Range Zone (Early Turonian), Choffatiaras segne Total Range Zone (Early Turonian) and Coilopoceras requinianum Total Range Zone (late Middle – early Late Turonian). Eleven biozones have been recognized based on other macrofossil assemblages. Bivalve zones; Eoradiolites liratus Total Range Zone (late Middle Cenomanian), Ilymatogyra (Afrogyra) africana Acme Zone (Late Cenomanian), Costagyra olisiponensis Total Range Zone (Late Cenomanian), Gyrostrea thevestensis Interval Zone (Coniacian), Nicaisolopha tissoti – Pycnodont (Costeina) costei - Plicatula ferryi Assemblage Zone (Coniacian – ?Santonian), and Pycnodonte (Phygraea) vesicularis Acme Zone (Late Campanian – Early Maastrichtian). Gastropod zones; Tylostoma globosum Acme Zone (Middle Turonian) and Trochacteon salomonis Total Range Zone (Late Turonian) and Echinoid zones; Hemiaster cubicus Total Range Zone (late Middle Cenomanian), Mecaster heberti turonensis - Coenholectypus turonensis Acme Zone (Early Turonian) and Phymosoma abbatei Acme Zone (Middle Turonian). Seventeen planktic foraminiferal zones have been recognized at Saint Paul section; Rotalipora cushmani Total Range Zone (Latest Cenomanian), Whitenella archaeocretacea Total Range Zone (Early Turonian), Globotruncanella havanensis Total Range Zone (Late Campanian), Globotruncana aegyptiaca Interval Zone (??Latest Campanian – Early Maastrichtian), Gansserina gansseri Interval Zone (Middle – early Late Maastrichtian), Abathomphalus mayaroensis Total Range Zone (Late Maastrichtian), Parvularugoglobigerina eugubina Total Range Zone (Earliest Paleocene), Morozovella pseudobulloides Interval Zone (Early Paleocene), Morozovella trinidadensis Interval Zone (late Early Paleocene), Morozovella uncinata Interval Zone (Middle Paleocene), Morozovella angulata Total Range Zone (Middle Paleocene), Planorotalites pusilla pusilla Interval Zone (late Middle Paleocene), Planorotalites pseudomenardii Interval Zone (Late Paleocene), Morozovella velascoensis Interval Zone (Latest Paleocene), Morozovella edgari Interval Zone (Earliest Eocene), Morozovella subbotinae Interval Zone (Early Eocene) and Morozovella formosa formosa Total Range Zone (Early Eocene). Fourteen planktic foraminiferal zones have been recognized at Sudr El-Hitan section as the same as of the last fourteen planktic foraminiferal zones mentioned from Saint Paul section. The integration between macrofossil and foraminiferal zones has been discussed.
