Abstract:

The current Paper aims to study the water and salt balance of Lake Qarun in Fayoum, to find out the reasons for increasing the level of the lake and its salinity. Therefore, the field, geographic, climatic data, digital elevation maps and satellite images were combined to build a digital model using (SOBEK- 1D & 2D). With the proposal of adding new evaporation ponds to withdraw saltwater from the lake, to eliminate excess water from the lake, as well as reduce the salt content of the lake. Several water and salt balance scenarios were also assumed. The results showed the effectiveness of the new evaporation ponds in reducing the level of Lake Qarun and reducing the salinity rate. Moreover increasing the capacity of the lake to receive new quantities of the agricultural drainage, which provides the opportunity to increase the water duty for Fayoum Governorate and reclaim new agricultural land
