This study delivers a thorough historic and economic investigation of Egypt's trade balance from 1884 to 2024, about nearly 140 years of structural economic changes, political alterations, and global incorporations. It analyzes the historical progression of Egypt's trade balance, shaped by elements including colonial dependency, liberalization policies, post-independence nationalizations, political instability, and economic reforms. The key aims of the study are to outline the fluctuations in Egypt's trade balance over time, assess the effect of geopolitical and economic transformations on the economic structure, evaluate the sustainability of deficits and surpluses, and gain economic insights to enhance the competitiveness of Egypt's exports.
To achieve the study goals, the researchers use a method that combines digging into history with statistics from places like the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS), the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE), United Nations trade databases, and old records. The study looks at trade by breaking it down by who was in charge, from when Abbas Hilmi I had extra agriculture goods (mainly Cotton) to export to Sisi's time when there's a growing shortage.
The findings show that Egypt has had a constant shortage, mainly because it sells raw materials (like cotton being the big thing until the 1970s) and buys manufactured goods. This has been made inferior by oil prices going crazy, an increasing population, and political problems. The study points out that Egypt is simply hurt by fluctuations in world goods prices and problems with its own systems. The policy advice stresses that it's important to sell a wider range of products, put money into education and skills, and update technology to create a trade balance that can last, which will help the country grow and be the trade partner with the world.
