The study aimed to test the relationship between digital transformation and Egyptian goods exports during the period (1994–2024). To achieve this objective, the study employed the Autoregressive Distributed Lag model (ARDL) to estimate the relationship between digital transformation, as an independent variable, alongside two additional variables—trade openness and institutional quality—and goods exports, as the dependent variable.
The study concluded that in the long run, both digital transformation and trade openness exert a positive impact on Egyptian goods exports. An increase of one percentage point in each of these factors leads to an increase in Egyptian goods exports by approximately 0.40 and 0.97 percentage points, respectively. Furthermore, in the short run, both trade openness and the lagged value of institutional quality positively affect Egyptian goods exports. Specifically, a one-percentage-point increase in each results in an approximate rise of 1.38 and 0.87 percentage points in Egyptian goods exports, respectively.
The study recommends the following: (1) Increasing investment in digital infrastructure, as it constitutes the backbone of digital transformation. (2) Adopting a comprehensive digital transformation approach based on several key pillars, most notably agricultural and industrial development, trade facilitation, and achieving equitable trade justice. (3) Pursuing a balanced approach when dealing with trade openness. (4) Continuing and intensifying institutional reform efforts to enhance the attractiveness of the Egyptian economy to productive investments, particularly in export-oriented sectors.
