Abstract:

Alvin Toffler is a prominent contemporary American thinker known for his unique perspective on civilization and the future. This study explores Toffler's division of history into three waves, exploring the characteristics and features of each wave, as well as his concept of time. Additionally, it delves into his most significant philosophical views on the philosophy of civilization and presents his vision regarding future predictions. The study addressed the concept of civilization both linguistically and terminologically, as well as other related concepts that connect civilization with history, culture, and civility. It examined the role of thinkers and philosophers in shaping the philosophy of civilization, starting with Ibn Khaldun as one of the pioneers in this field, and then Condorcet as a leading figure in the philosophy of civilization during the modern era, followed by an analysis of Spengler, one of the most prominent philosophers of civilization and history, whose philosophy stands out for its unique approach, including the biological interpretation of history and the cycles of civilizations. After that the study of Toynbee who is considered as a key contemporary philosopher of civilization, focusing on his comprehensive description and framework for human history within the context of his "challenge and response" theory. The study also explored the concept of the future and its connection to history, along with the philosophy of the future as one of the most significant contemporary concepts that have garnered the attention of philosophers. It examined the relationship between science, philosophy, and the future, as well as the challenges associated with studying the future. The study traced the emergence of future studies, highlighting their importance for humanity's future, and analyzed the principles underlying these studies and how philosophers have addressed the philosophy of future studies. The study further examined Toffler’s futurism, including his definition of the term "future shock" and his future predictions based on two main pillars: the concept of change and the idea of prediction (social analysis). Additionally, it discussed Toffler's pragmatic approach, clarified the sources of power, and studied the concept of knowledge, its characteristics, and its role in the society of the future, and also analyzed Toffler's division of human knowledge into three stages—narrative knowledge, metanarrative knowledge, and scientific knowledge.
