Abstract:

Summary and Conclusion Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder. It is the third most common neurological disorder in old age after dementia and stroke. The symptomatic epilepsy is common in the first two decades of life and after 60 years of age. Cerebrovascular disorders are the most common pathological factor underlying seizures in elderly people. This study was designed to detect the prevalence of post-stroke epilepsy in patients 60 years and above & to evaluate the risk factors and clinical characteristics of post-stroke epilepsy. This study was performed in neuropsychiatry department at Benha University Hospital from February 2013 till April 2014. The study included 100 patients with stroke and divided into 2 groups: Group1: patients with post-stroke epilepsy (21 patients). Group2: stroke cases without epilepsy (79 patients). Conclusion We concluded the following from this study: • Post-stroke epilepsy is associated with large cortical brain lesions. • Uncontrolled DM, HTN, lipid profile& serum electrolyte level are strong risk factors for post-stroke epilepsy in old age. • Early onset post stroke seizure is more common than late onset one.
