Abstract:

: Febrile convulsions generate as much anxiety among parents and relatives. Nursing care should be directed toward educating the child and family and helping them to develop strategies to cope with the psychological and sociological problems related to disease. Nurse should educate the parents about condition, how to reduce fever, perform first aid practices if child has convulsion and educate about when to call ambulance. The aim of the study was to introduce an intervention program for mothers for upgrading mother’s knowledge, practice and allaying their concern in relation to management of febrile convulsion. The study was conducted in the pediatric department at Benha University Hospital, Benusuf University Hospital and Ain Shams University Hospital. A quasi- experimental design was used in this study. The sample size is consisted a representative sample of 158 mothers accompanying their children according to the study formula which selected based on the total number of children (no= 600) who admitted to the above settings during 2011. Data were collected using predesigned questionnaire sheet, parental practices questionnaire and State anxiety Inventory. The results showed a statistically significant improvement in mother's knowledge, practice and concern about febrile convulsion after implementation of the program. There is a statistically significant positive correlation between the knowledge and practice scores. Also, the knowledge and practice scores have statistically significant correlation with the demographic characteristics. It is recommended that there is a need for continuous educational programs to provide mothers with enough information and training relevant to febrile convulsion. The study can be replicated using a large sample thereby finding can be generalized to a large population. Also, the health care providers should spend enough time with mothers attending a febrile convulsion child, explaining and answering their queries about the condition and providing them with adequate information that might reduce their fear.
