Abstract:

Background Intrauterine devices (IUD( are very common contraceptive method of family planning used world wide . IUCD were used by about 17% of women of child bearing age in developing countries and 9% in developed countries or more than 180 million women worldwide. Aim To assess uterine artery Doppler in patients with abnormal uterine bleeding in females using intrauterine copper contraceptive device. Patients and Methods Prospective clinical study performed at Benha university hospital on 150 women attending Gynecology outpatient clinic. Women included three groups: Group I: included 50 women using CIUCD and complaining of menorrhagia or menometrorrhagia. Group II: included 50 women using CIUCD and not complaining of abnormal uterine bleeding. They attended outpatient clinic complaining of vaginal discharge or inability to feel the threads of CIUCD or requesting CIUCD removal. Group III: included 50 women not using not using any method of contraception not complaining of abnormal uterine bleeding . ultrasound examination was done transvaginal transducer with color Doppler facilities (Voluson 730-D GE) to measure pulsitility index (PI) and resistance index (RI). Results The RI and PI were significantly lower in group I compared to group II and group III. Conclusion The presence of an IUCD (TCU 380 A) seem to cause change in uterine blood flow assessed by pulsed Doppler ultrasonography. So transvaginal Doppler can be used to identify women at risk of developing abnormal uterine bleeding after CIUCD insertion.
