Abstract:

Natural disasters, such as windstorms and floods, caused significant loss across the United States in the last decade, paralyzing a great number of buildings systems especially traditional wood houses. As a potential substitute for conventional wood panels, Composite Structural Insulated Panels (CSIPs) are made of low-cost thermoplastic orthotropic glass/polypropylene laminates as the facesheet and expanded polystyrene foam as the core. The CSIPs consists of merits such as high strength-weight ratio, fast construction with modular manufacturer and easy repair, and relatively low life time cost. This study evaluates the resilience of building envelop systems with CSIPs under multi-hazards by performing the full-scale windstorm and flood tests. The results demonstrates the CSIPs to have excellent potential for disaster resilient envelope design.
